Curriculum Benefits

Global Classrooms Model UN curriculum benefits students, teachers and the community.

Students

  • Global Classrooms impacts the way students think and the way they make decisions in school, at home, with their peers, and later in the culturally diverse work force. The program emphasizes non-violent behavior in solving problems, negotiating and understanding other points of view, in addition to learning about different forms of government, democracy and international positions/perspectives on issues.

  • Literacy within the Boston Public Schools is a challenge that we want to address through stimulating and interactive programs based on three central categories:
  1. Auditory (listening to speeches, understanding the information presented, and implications for other represented countries through role-play)
  2. Visual (map reading, understanding geographic components which could have contributed to the international dispute, and computer literacy)
  3. Writing and Research (articulating a logical and organized analysis of their country's opinion for resolving the conflict).
  • Public speaking contributes to effective communication skills, which is necessary in resolving conflict. In addition, public speaking builds confidence and self-esteem and leadership skills. This curriculum also strengthens listening and critical analysis skills by encouraging all "student ambassadors" to prepare responses based on other country presentations. As public speaking is a great fear among Americans (in fact in the entire world), the opportunity to learn this skill in high school gives students a strong advantage when entering the workplace where they may be called upon the make presentations.

Teachers

The Global Classrooms Curriculum is a practical, effective and current resource for middle and high school social studies teachers. This curriculum supports the state and national curriculum frameworks. Teachers benefit in the following ways:

  • As teachers actually participate in and experience the simulation, their comprehension of the conflict resolution and negotiation process is greatly improved, as is their ability to teach these skills.
  • The simulation encourages and allows teachers to be facilitators, while challenging students to think critically, analyze options and make smart decisions.
  • The Global Classrooms Director and UNA-GB are focused on continuously supporting the teachers to provide resources, information, and other teacher needs.
  • Both the formal and informal professional development opportunities are an important component that supports experienced and new curriculum users through mentoring and peer networks.

Community

The Global Classrooms curriculum fosters communication between Social Studies teachers and classrooms and families across neighborhoods and cultural divides through several methods:

  • Teachers from different schools interact, share ideas and learn from each other in implementing the curriculum and applying the resources in unique ways.
  • The simulations are encouraged to be recorded (video) in order to document and present to families and communities.
  • The participants and families interact at school and community events and highlight their students' accomplishments and participation.
