United Nations Association of Greater Boston's Education Office is actively engaging teachers, students, schools, and community organizations in learning opportunities based on the United Nations, global affairs, negotiations and conflict resolution. In addition to the Global Classrooms curriculum, UNA-GB offers multiple workshops and seminars that incorporate unique learning methods with relevant and important content in order to prepare our students to be contributing members of society. We would be delighted for you to join us in our learning adventures!
Global Classrooms: Peacekeeping Unit Model UN Curriculum
The Global Classroom: Peacekeeping Unit curriculum is a standards-based curriculum that brings the Model UN experience into the classroom through a series of class sessions that teach negotiation, communication, research, and conflict resolution skills. The program culminates in a Security Council simulation using one of 4 included crisis scenarios, which vary in level of difficulty. Model UN teaches students to better understand cultural differences, diverse points of view, and non-violent conflict resolution by bringing the complexities of global issues into the classroom. The Global Classrooms curriculum allows students to play the role of country ambassadors to the Security Council and strive to solve a conflict. They research the countries they represent and the positions they would likely hold when confronting the crisis.
Professional Development Opportunities
Teachers looking to use Model UN as a teaching tool can take advantage of UNA-GB’s professional development opportunities. Whether it is a formal full-day seminar or an informal after school workshop, teachers receive training in the use of the curriculum, conducting simulations and preparing students for a Model UN conference. Additionally, seminars often feature local experts to discuss curriculum and conference topics. These professional development opportunities are also available to community based after school programs that use Model UN.
