Sisters in Law
Bring your sisters, mothers, daughters and friends to celebrate International Women's Day with us! Sisters in Law has been screened at more than 120 festivals worldwide. This fascinating and often hilarious documentary follows tough-minded Cameroonian state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and court president Beatrice Ntuba as they help women in their village fight cases of abuse. A luncheon discussion with Francis Deng, is a former Sudanese Ambassador to the US and former Sudanese minister of state for foreign affairs. He was the first Southern Sudanese person to obtain a PhD in any subject. Currently Director of Displacement Studies at SAIS. Co-hosted with the Boston Committee on Foreign Relations. Tuesday, April 3 - YPIC Film Screeing and Discussion - Between Two Fires: Torture and Displacement in Northern Uganda
A free film screening with Grace Grall Akallo. Grace was kidnapped by the LRA when she was 14. She escaped 7 months later and has since become a vocal activist for the rights of children in conflict areas. Between Two Fires documents the results of two decades of armed conflict between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government in the Northern Uganda, which has caused some nearly two million civilians to be displaced from their homes. Through the personal stories of torture survivors, Between Two Fires advocates for official acknowledgement of these abuses and redress for torture victims. The film is 14 min long.
Co-Hosted by Young Professionals for International Cooperation and HSPH Mental Health Student Consortium. At Harvard School of Public Health, G-2 Kresge Building. 6:00pm.

A Women's Forum Dinner and Discussion with Deborah Drake of Accion International, a leading microcredit organization that gives people the tools they need to work their way out of poverty. By providing “micro” loans and business training to poor women and men who start their own businesses, Accion’s partner lending organizations help people work their own way up the economic ladder, with dignity and pride. Thursday, May 17- Fighting Human Trafficking and Slavery with Social Enterprise
Human trafficking is the third largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. This conference will address poverty as a root cause of human trafficking, and the potential for social enterprise to combat trafficking, both as a preventive measure in at-risk groups and a tool for empowering former victims. Leslie Stimmel Guggiari is Dean of Students at Franklin College in Switzerland, and is actively involved in the Humanitarian Foundation Arcobaleno, a development project to benefit children in India, many orphans, by providing housing, education and medical care. Wednesday, August 15 - Women's Forum Dinner and Discussion: Tilapia Farming in Haiti
Fish food being developed by scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) may ultimately help to alleviate hunger in tropical third world countries. The MBL researchers, who are part of the Laboratory’s Program in Scientific Aquaculture, are working with missionaries in Haiti to address the critical need for a nutritious, plant-based diet for aquacultured fish being raised in the poverty-striken country. Join us for a presentation and discussion with Gillian Sorensen, former Assistant Secretary-General and current Senior Advisor at the United Nations Foundation. In her capacity at the UN, Ms. Sorensen was responsible for outreach to non- governmental organizations and was the contact point for the Secretary-General with parliamentarians, the academic world, religious leaders and other groups committed to peace, justice, development and human rights.
