Special Screening and Discussion: Long Day's Journey into Night
South Africa, 1993: an American Fulbright scholar working to combat apartheid and support the free elections, Amy Biehl, is pulled from her car and killed by a militant mob in a township near Cape Town. Five years later, the youths involved in Amy's death receive amnesty from South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) with the full cooperation of her parents. Linda Biehl, Amy's mother, and Ntobeko Peni, who received amnesty, will discuss their experiences with the reconciliation process and their ongoing work following the screening. . This year's United Nations Day Luncheon will welcome UK Ambassador to the UN John Sawers. Since Prime Minister Gordon Brown has come to office in the UK, his foreign office has focused on encouraging a strong and positive US role at the UN and in the world. 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Partner Events
On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is the foundation of international human rights law, the first universal statement on the basic principles of inalienable human rights, and a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. UNA-GB is pleased to serve as a partner/affiliate organization for several events celebrating the upcoming anniversary of this historic event.
