Global Issues Series Event, Challenges in Responding to the Earthquake in Haiti
Michel Gabaudan has been the regional representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for the US and the Caribbean since 2006.  Before that, he served as the UNHCR’s representative for China and Mongolia (2004-6), the Pacific (2001-4), and Mexico (1995-8).  He has also worked for the UNHCR in field operations in Thailand, Pakistan, and Cameroon, and at its headquarters in Geneva.  Trained as a physician, Gabaudan spent a decade working in Guyana, Zambia, Brazil, London, and Yemen before joining the UNHCR. This event is a joint meeting with the Boston Committee on Foreign Relations.

Global Issues Series Event, Non-Proliferation & Armed Violence
UNA-GB, Swissnex and WorldBoston invite you to join a luncheon discussion with Amb. Peter Maurer on key issues facing the UN, including non-proliferation, climate change, peace-keeping operations and peace-building. Amb. Maurer has been named Switzerland's new secretary of state in the Foreign Affairs Office, where he will serve Federal Councilor Micheline Calmy-Rey. He has served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations since September 2004.

This year's United Nations Day Luncheon will welcome Canada's Ambassador to the UN John McNee. Ambassador McNee’s keynote to our community is especially significant given Canada’s leadership role in the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, on climate change, and many other critical global issues. Kimball Lecture: Behind the Scenes at the United Nations
How do 192 United Nations member states reach consensus on resolutions adopted in the many different UN fora and agencies? Sophie Belfrage
Becker will give us an insider's view of how negotiations at the UN are conducted, providing examples from important UN summits, including those focused on HIV/AIDS, Financing for Development, and the Millennium Summit which created the MDGs. Belfrage Becker is the First Secretary for Economic and Social Affairs at the Swedish Mission to the United Nations, and recently served as a fellow as the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. This program is open to the public. At Milton Academy's Straus Library.

Global Issues Series Event, Israel and the World: A View from the United Nations
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gabriela Shalev, will join us for a breakfast talk on foreign affairs from an Israeli perspective. She has previously served as president of the Academic Council and rector of Ono Academic College in Israel. Until 2002, she was a professor of contract law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has  taught at Harvard Law School, Boston College and Temple University. Presented in collaboration with Boston Committee on Foreign Relations.

Global Issues Series Event, Israel, Palestine, and the Future of the Middle East
Rami Khouri is director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut and editor at large of Beirut’s Daily Star. Previously he was editor in chief of the Jordon Times and a Neiman Fellow at Harvard University.  In recent years Khouri has hosted a weekly current affairs talk show on Jordan Television.  He is also a senior fellow at the Dubai Initiative at Harvard’s Kennedy School, a research associate at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, and a fellow of the Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs. Presented in collaboration with Boston Committee on Foreign Relations

Global Issues Series Event, Tales from Tehran: US and Iran in the Era of Obama
Join us for a lunchtime lecture and discussion with Dr. Jim Walsh, an expert in international security and a Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his current projects are two series of dialogues on nuclear issues, one with representatives from North Korea and one with leading figures in Iran. He has traveled to both countries and has testified before the Senate on Iran's nuclear program. Presented in collaboration with Boston Committee on Foreign Relations.
